520 - La sentinelle

O'neill vient remettre son rapport de la dernière mission pendant que Hammond essaie de contacter Sg-9 qui était parti en mission sur la planète des Tonians. Sg-9 était en négociation sur cette planète pour essayer de réparer une arme nommée " La Sentinelle ", qui avait été endommagée par les équipes SG rebelles du NID.

Sg-9 n'a pas réussi à faire fonctionner l'arme et les Goa'ulds ont envahi la planète et les empêches de repartir par la Porte des étoiles. Hammond informe Sg-1 que " La Sentinelle " ne fonctionne plus et que les Terriens sont responsables des actes de l'équipe SG rebelles et qu'ils doivent aller la réparer mais Carter signale qu'il ne réussiront pas sans l'aide de Tobias, un des membres de l'équipe SG rebelle qui avait examiner la Sentinelle.

O'neill rencontre alors Tobias qui accepte de les aider à réparer la Sentinelle à condition que lui et Grieves puisse venir sur la planète en personne. O'neill accepte. Le SGC envoie alors l'UAV part la Porte des étoiles pour localiser les endroits où les Goa'ulds se sont installés pour protégés la Porte des étoiles.

Ils activent alors la nouvelle arme du SGC, des missiles balistiques guidés par l'UAV. Les 2 missiles détruisent les emplacements des Jaffas et Sg-1 ainsi que Sg-3 partent alors vers la Porte des étoiles. Sg-1 suit alors la direction que leur indiquent Tobias et Grieves. En chemin, il rencontre un membre de Sg-9 qui leur indique qu'il est le seul survivant de son équipe.

O'neill et le membre de Sg-9 se dirigent alors vers la cité pendant que Carter et les autres se dirigent vers la Sentinelle. Arriver à la Sentinelle, Tobias et Grieves commence à travailler pour désactiver le champ de force qui protège celle-ci.

Dans la ville, un Goa'uld informe le chef des Tonians qu'ils seront faits esclaves et qu'ils détruiront la Sentinelle. Pendant que Sg-1 travaille sur la Sentinelle, O'neill essaie de convaincre le chef les Tonians de faire évacué sa ville par la Porte des étoiles mais celui-ci refuse car il est certain que la Sentinelle va les protégés.

Un groupe de Jaffas arrivent alors près de la Sentinelle et Teal'c et O'neill commencent alors à tirer pour les retarder. Jackson donne son arme à Tobias pour qu'il aie combattre les Goa'ulds pendant qu'il essaie de désactiver le champ de force. Dans la cité, O'neill est entrain de parler au chef des Tonians lorsqu'un vaisseau mère commence à tirer sur la ville.

O'neill dit alors qu'ils quittent planète avec ou sans les Tonians. Jackson réussit alors à désactiver le champ de force mais des Jaffas arrivent alors en renforts. Sg-3 contacte alors le SGC par la Porte des étoiles pour signaler qu'un vaisseau mère Goa'uld est en orbite et qu'ils n'ont pas de nouvelle de Sg-1.

Tobias et Grieves ne réussissent pas à réparer la Sentinelle et Sg-1 doit se réfugier dans la grotte qui abrite la Sentinelle tout en essayant t de remettre le champ de force opérationnel. Dans la ville, O'neill essaie de convaincre les Tonians d'évacuer une dernière fois.

Dans la grotte, Grieves réussit à réactiver le champ de force au moment même où les Jaffas pénétrait dans celle-ci, mais elle se fait touché par le tir d'une lance Goa'uld avant d'être protégés par le champ de force. Dans la ville, O'neill et le membre de Sg-9 se font faire prisonniers par un des Jaffas.

Dans la grotte, Jackson déchiffre quelques symboles qui rappellent à Grieves et à Tobias qu'ils avaient tué le protecteur de la sentinelle lors de leur première visite sur cette planète. Des Jaffas débarquent alors avec O'neill et le membre de Sg-9 et menace de les tués s'ils ne désactive pas le champ de force.

Grieves se dirige vers la Sentinelle en disant qu'il va désactiver le champ de force mais en vérité il a compris le fonctionnement de la Sentinelle et active celle-ci. La Sentinelle émets alors une "onde" qui fais disparaître tous les Goa'ulds sur et en orbite de la planète. Tobias c'est sacrifié pour sauver les Tonians et Sg-1. Sg-1 retourne alors au SGC.

 

520 – La sentinelle

Salle de contrôle de la Porte des Étoiles.

Hammond : Heure de retour de SG9 ?

Harriman : Le retour de la mission était prévue à 11 heures, mon Général.

Hammond : Ça ne ressemble pas au Major Benton, entrez en contact avec P2A 018 et tentait d'établir une liaison radio avec l'équipe.
Jack : Mon Général, voici mon rapport de mission, mieux vaut tard que jamais, comme on dit.

Harriman : Chevron 1 enclenché.

Hack Ouais, j'aime bien cette expression.

Harriman ; Chevron 2 enclenché.

Jack : Qu'est-ce qu'il y a ?

Hammond : SG9 a été envoyé en mission ( Harriman : Chevron 3 enclenché ) pour essayer de rétablir des relations diplomatiques avec P2A 018

Harriman : Chevron 4 enclenché.

Jack : 018 ?

Hammond : Latona.
Jack : Ah, oui.

Hammond : C'est une des planètes explorées par le NID lors de leur programme intergalactique.

Jack : Je vois.

Hammond : Le Major Benton a passé plusieurs mois a essayé de négocier (Harriman : Chevron 5 enclenché) l'accès à une arme défensive nommée la Sentinelle, elle est supposée avoir la capacité de défendre leur planète.

Jack : Oui, j'ai lu les rapports.

Harriman : Chevron 6 enclenché.

Hammond : SG9 devait rentrer à 11 heures ce matin.

Harriman : Chevron 7 enclenché et verrouillé. Mon Général la liaison est établie.
Hammond : Ici, le Général Hammond, Major Benton, vous auriez dû réintégrer la base à 11 heures Y a t-il eu un problème Major Benton ? J'attends votre rapport.

Homme : Mon Général, ici le sergent Grogan, le Major Benton a été... il y a trois jours...les latoniens ont essayé...je ne sais pas...

Hammond : Sergent, vous est-il possible de passer la Porte des Étoiles ?

Grogan : Négatif. Il y a des positions de jaffas de chaque côté, je ne peux absolument pas l'approcher. L'ennemi fait feu...

Hammond : Sergent désactivé !

Harriman : A vos ordres.

SG1 et Hammond regarde une vidéo.

 

Voix d'un homme : Allez-y Marul.

Marul : Vos amis me voient ?

Homme : Pas encore, je leur enverrais la bande avec mon rapport.
Marul : Qu'est-ce que je dois dire ?
Homme : Ce qui vous passe par la tête. Haha ! Je ne sais pas, bonjour par exemple.

Marul : Bonjour, bonjour

Homme : C'est très bien.

 

Hammond éteint la vidéo

Jack : L'espèce de salle traître !

Daniel : Il a l'air plutôt sympathique.

Jack : Non, je parle du type qu'on entend derrière la caméra.
Hammond : Le Colonel Shaun Greaves est un ancien du NID, il a dirigé une mission intergalactique pour le Colonel Maybourne qui a été condamné avec d'autres membres de l'organisation pour haute trahison.

Daniel : Et pour quelles raisons, ils ont dû voler quelque chose ?

Hammond : Les latoniens possèdent une arme de défense planétaire appelée la Sentinelle, elle a été capable de posséder leur peuple pendant plusieurs générations.

Sam : Je comprends pourquoi le NID a cherché à s'en emparer.

Jack : On va les mettre hors-jeu avant que ça les reprennent.

Hammond : Mais j'ai bien peur que l'équipe du Colonel Greaves se soit déjà penchée sur le fonctionnement de la Sentinelle et l'ait quelque peu endommagé.

Jack : Vous vous voulez dire qu'ils l'ont légèrement bidouillé.

Sam : D'après le rapport de Greaves, les latoniens n'auraient jamais autorisé son équipe à s'approcher de la Sentinelle, cela avant que lui et sa bande ne soient rappelés et interpellés.

Daniel : J'ai dû mal à croire que des membres du NID en mission ait trahi !

Teal'c : Et pourtant c'est le cas, Daniel.

Daniel : Oui, et donc, si l'équipe de Greaves a mis en panne leur unique système de défense.

Sam : Nous en sommes responsable.

Jack : C'est Greaves, le responsable c'est pas nous !

Hammond : Je doute que les latoniens fassent cette subtile distinction, Colonel.

Teal'c : Il ne faut jamais sous-estimé ses ennemis, les forces Goa'uld que l'équipe a croisé sur Latona ont dû être envoyé en éclaireur pour tester leur défense.

Sam : Et s'assurer qu'il était bien non opérationnel.
Daniel : Et à présent ils n'attendent plus que les ordres.

Teal'c : Un vaisseau-mère des Goa'ulds doit probablement stationner dans les parages, maintenant qu'ils savent que Latona est à leur portée.

Jack : Mon Général, c'est peut-être l'occasion rêvée de tester notre nouvelle sonde de surveillance

Hammond : Je pense que c'est possible.

Sam : Mon Général, avant de partir ça serait peut être utile d'avoir une discussion avec Greaves.

Jack : Pourquoi ?

Sam : Que cela nous plaise ou non, le Colonel Greaves et le lieutenant Kershaw sont peut être les deux seules personnes capable de réparer la Sentinelle.

Jack : Je m'en occupe.

 

Dans une prison.

Jack à un garde : Laissez-nous !

Greaves : Il a peur que j'essaye de vous tuer.

Jack : J'en ai vu d'autre, alors, laissez-nous ! (le garde sort) Vous avez eu des visites dernièrement Maybourne est venu prendre des nouvelles de sa chère équipe ?

Greaves : Que voulez-vous O'Neill ?

Jack : P2A 018, ça vous dit quelque chose, la Sentinelle.

Greaves : Ça devrait.

Jack : Je veux savoir ce que vous avez trafiqué dessus et comment la rendre de nouveau opérationnelle.

Greaves : J'ai plutôt envie de vous dire d'aller vous faire voir.

Jack : A l'heure où je vous parle les hommes de SG9 sont peut-être entre les mains des Goa'ulds ou déjà morts, alors il va falloir vous montrez coopératif.
Greaves : Pourquoi vous me dîtes ça ?
Jack : Parce que c'est vous le responsable. Si 018 n'a plus de système de défense, c'est votre faute.

Greaves : Grâce à vous la Terre n'a pu acquérir un système de défense efficace, mais ça, ça ne vous empêche pas de dormir !

Jack : Vous avez essayé de faire main basse sur une arme de haute technologie de nos alliés, je ne vous aurais pas fait arrêté, eux l'auraient fait.

Greaves : Vous prenez les Asgards et les Tok'ra pour des enfants de cœur, mais dès que les Goa'ulds décideront de s'attaquer à nos défenses, ils en profiteront aussi pour nous envahir. Et ça ne devrait pas tarder, nous avons besoin de cette arme, alors ne vous voilez pas la face.

Jack : Bien, il ne me reste plus qu'à aller faire la causette à Kershaw.

Greaves : Les latoniens ont refusé de nous montrer la Sentinelle, nous l'avons trouvé par nous même non loin de la ville. On s'est heurté à un champ de force magnétique qui protégeait l'arme. Kershaw et moi, avons mis deux semaines pour la désactiver ensuite, nous avons pu démonter l'engin, l'étudier et le remonter.

Jack : Non ! Pas tout à fait, vous l'avez mal remonté.

Greaves : La seule chose qu'on a fait de mal, c'est de revenir à la base où avez été nommé le nouveau CO, le plus comique c'est qu'à l'époque j'étais impatient de vous rencontrer.

Jack : Vous allez m'expliquer dans le détail comment vous êtes arrivés à la Sentinelle et la marche à suivre pour remonter correctement l'engin.

Greaves : Si je collabore, je veux que ma peine soit commuée.

Jack : Je crois qu'on pourra s'entendre.

Greaves : Il va falloir qu'on vienne avec vous, Kershaw et moi.

Jack : On va se débrouiller sans vous.

Greaves : Vous vous prenez pour qui ? Vous nous sous-estimez, on était bon autant que vous, nous avons œuvré aussi dans l'intérêt de notre pays, si vous m'aviez pas fait écroué, nous aurions notre propre Sentinelle.

Jack : C'est fini ?

Greaves : Carter est peut-être une scientifique hors-pair et vous un officier d'élite, mais je vous affirme que vous aurez besoin de nous pour le réparer. Il est bien trop sophistiqué. Et vous le savez très bien, sinon vous ne seriez pas là.

 

Salle de contrôle de la Porte des Étoiles.

Harriman : La sonde de reconnaissance est positionnée, mon Général.

Sam : On reçoit le signal télémétrique confirmation de deux factions de défenses ennemies embusquées à 20 mètres environ de chaque côté de la Porte. Nous avons de la chance, mon Général, ils n'ont pas arrivés à abattre la navette de reconnaissance sur sa trajectoire.

Hammond : Programmez le lancement lorsque la navette aura atteint l'attitude requit ! Baissez le volet de protection et préparez le lancement.

Harriman : Prêt pour le lancement.

Sam : Cible Sierra 1 repérée.

Hammond : Sergent lancez le missile !

Harriman : Lancement de missile

Sam : Sierra 1 détruite, tentative de repérage de Sierra 2.

Greaves : Comment savez-vous qu'il n'y a que deux positions qui garde la Porte ?

Jack : On n'en sait rien.

Sam : Sierra 2 a été repérée par la navette.

Hammond : Lancement de missile.

Sam : Sierra 2 a été détruite, mais impossible de savoir s'il y a des survivants. Repositionnement de la navette pour la phase deux.

Jack : A nous de jouer.

Hammond : Colonel, surveillez SG3.

 

Salle d'embarquement de la Porte des Étoiles.

Jack : Major Lawrence vous partirez en reconnaissance.

Lawrence : A vos ordres, mon Colonel.

Jack : Teal'c partez avec eux, ils seront plus en sécurité. Nous vous rejoindrons dans 60 secondes.

Lawrence : SG3 c'est partie, on y va. Go ! Go !

Greaves : Je n'apprécie pas trop de débarquer là-bas sans être armé.

Jack : Moi j'adore cette idée.

Kershaw : Je me sens très rassurée de savoir que c'est un archéologue qui va me protéger.

Daniel en montrant son couteau : De quel côté est-ce qu'on met les balles déjà ?

Greaves : Je me ferais un plaisir de vous montrer.

Jack : L'objectif principal de notre mission est de remettre en état ce que vous avez endommagé. Si vous avez d'autres idées derrière la tête, je vous descends, c'est clair ?

Greaves : Très clair.

Jack : Après vous.

 

Sur Latona

 

Sam : Aucune trace de SG3

Jack : Ici SG1, SG3 au rapport.

Teal'c : Trois guerriers jaffas ont survécut à l'attaque des missiles, l'équipe SG3 nous a devancé pour couvrir notre arrivée. Le Major Lawrence propose qu'on poursuive la mission.

Jack : Pfff (A Greaves) Colonel ?

Greaves : Je ne peux pas me battre sans arme.

Jack : Vous allez indiquer à Teal'c, la bonne direction.

Daniel : Simple curiosité, combien d'années de réduction de peine lui avez-vous promis s'il parvient à faire les réparations ?

Jack : A vrai dire, nous avons négocié quelques années de plus.

Daniel : Comment ça ?

Jack : Ils étaient condamnés à mort.

Sam : Comment avez-vous su où était la Sentinelle sans la collaboration des Latoniens ?

Kershaw : Parce qu'on est les meilleurs.

Jack : Vous avez soudoyé un officiel ?

Greaves : Ça serait plutôt votre genre.
Daniel : Le premier rapport du Major Benton disait que les Latoniens étaient un peuple iléite, par exemple ils n'utilisent pas de monnaie

Kershaw : Ils n'accordent pas d'importance au matériel.

Jack : Ouais ! Chacun ses valeurs.

Homme : Colonel.

Jack : Grogan. Vous n'êtes pas blessé ?

Grogan : J'ai été poursuivit par une patrouille jaffa pendant toute la journée, je n'avais pas le choix, j'ai dû me planquer.

Teal'c : Ça s'est passé quand ?

Grogan : Hier soir. J'ai dû m'évanouir et ils ne m'ont pas repéré. Ils doivent être loin maintenant.

Jack : Où est le reste de votre équipe ?

Grogan : Le Major Benton a été touché lorsqu'on a essayé de franchir la Porte. Tartman et Winters ont réussi a s'enfuir avec moi, mais je suis le seul à avoir survécut.

Sam lui donne de l'eau

Sam : Tenez.

Grogan : On se croyait protégé, mon Colonel, les Latoniens on paraît-il une arme...

Jack : On est au courant lieutenant.
Sam : On vient la réparer. Mon Colonel, je préviens SG3 pour dire que Grogan va franchir la Porte ?
Jack : Négatif Major. Teal'c combien de temps, il faudra au vaisseau-mère pour arriver jusqu'ici ?
Teal'c : Je ne peux pas être affirmatif, plusieurs heures, peut-être même plusieurs jours.

Jack : Grogan, vous pouvez nous conduire à la Cité ?

Grogan : Il y a des patrouilles jaffas un peu partout pour vérifier si les latoniens respectent bien le couvre feu, mais enfin je peux vous jusqu'à Marul, si vous le désirez ?

Kershaw : Ça ne servirait à rien.

Sam : Pourquoi dites-vous ça ?

Kershaw : La Sentinelle a été construite, il y a des centaines d'années par les ancêtres de Marul, il n'a aucune idée de son fonctionnement.

Greaves : Aucun Latonien d'ailleurs.

Jack : Peu importe, nous sommes venu pour aider ce peuple.

Greaves : Et qu'est-ce que vous comptez faire ?

Jack : Essayais de leur offrir un autre avenir que celui de disparaître du système planétaire. Grogan, vous vous sentez d'attaque ?

Grogan : Mmm, Mmm.

Jack : Bien. Carter à vous de jouer !

Sam : A vos ordres.

Jack : Je compte sur vous.

Sam : Ouais. Bonne chance mon Colonel. Allons-y !

 

Grogan : C'est la route principale qui mène à la Cité.
Jack : Vous n'aviez pas un chemin moins exposé, par hasard ?

Grogan : Si bien-sûr, mon Colonel.

 

Kershaw : C'est là.

Daniel : Vous êtes sûre ?

Greaves : Nous sommes passés par là, la première fois.

Sam : Très bien, on y va.

Teal'c : Major, ça serait plus raisonnable que nous restions en faction ici pour surveiller l'entrée.

Sam : Du moins jusqu'à ce que le champ magnétique soit opérationnel.

Daniel : Ça va prendre combien de temps ?

Kershaw : La dernière fois, ça nous a pris 48 heures.

Sam : Peut-être que Daniel pourra vous aider à réduire ce délai, nous devons agir vite !

 

Jaffa : Vous ne suivez aucune des consignes que je vous ai donné. Votre peuple ne respecte pas le couvre feu.

Marul : Pourquoi devrait-il respecter un couvre feu ?

Jaffa : Pour une raison évidente, Lord Svarog a décidé de conquérir Latona pour l'annexer à son royaume et c'est une question de jour, voir même d'heures. Soumettez-vous et vous vivrez, pour avoir l'honneur de le servir.

Marul : Mon peuple ne sera jamais, un peuple esclave.

Jaffa : Lorsque la colère de Svarog s'abbatera sur votre peuple, celui-ci implorera sa pitié et sera bien obligé de se soumettre.
Marul : Il ne se soumettra jamais.

Jaffa : Si, il se rendra, devant le compte de tout ses cadavres. Ceci est mon dernier avertissement.

Marul : Votre Lord ne peut rien contre cette planète ; la Sentinelle nous protège et l'empêchera d'envahir Latona.
Jaffa : Vous nous avez demandé trois jours, maintenant je veux une réponse. La Sentinelle n'est rien d'autre qu 'une légende.
Marul : C'est faux, elle existe vraiment

Jaffa : Alors mes hommes la trouveront et la détruiront.

 

Grogan : N'ayez pas peur Marul, c'est un ami.

Marul : Il est de votre monde ?
Grogan : Oui Marul, il a fait tout ce chemin pour vous rencontrer.

Jack : Je suis le Colonel Jack O'Neill, il faut que nous parlions.

 

Kershaw : Évitez de toucher à ça.

Daniel : Ça ne ressemble vraiment pas à une arme.

Greaves : Comme vous n'avez rien de mieux à faire docteur. Allez donc rejoindre vos amis à l'entrée.

Daniel : J'aurais bien voulu vous aider, mais j'ai l'impression que vous ne savez pas comment vous y prendre.

Kershaw : Le son référent change constamment, il faut qu'on le définisse.

Daniel : Vous perlez de ces sons ?

Kershaw : Le code pour fermer le champ change avec les différentes harmoniques qui ont toute en commun, un même son référent.

Daniel : Et comment de probabilité de son référent ?

Kershaw : On a enregistré, une centaine.

Daniel ; Ah ! Dans ce cas je devrais peut-être...

Greaves : La fermer !

Daniel : Ouais (Il commence à siffler)

 

Marul : Merci pour votre aide, mais elle est, nous est inutile.

Jack : Je ne crois pas non.

Marul : La Sentinelle n'a pas failli depuis des siècles, elle nous protégera jusqu'à la fin des temps.

Jack : Que s'est-il passé alors ?

Marul : J'ai envoyé un messager à la Sentinelle, pour répondre à cette question, peut-être est-elle en sommeil. Vous verrez, elle nous protégera de l'ennemi en temps voulu.

Jack : Et comment exactement ?

Marul : Lorsque nos ennemis, nous attaquerons la Sentinelle les transformera en lumière blanche.

Jack : En lumière blanche ?

Marul : Comme tous nos ancêtres immortels. Nous ne voulons pas de mal à nos ennemis, nous voulons juste qu'ils nous laissent vivre en paix.

Jack : Et c'est tout ?

Grogan : Mon Colonel, leur technologie est très peu évoluée, personne ne sait comment la Sentinelle fonctionne, l'important c'est qu'elle fonctionne.

Jack : Vous avez déjà vu la Sentinelle en activité ?

Marul : Oh oui, quand j'étais enfant un ennemi de notre peuple a essayé de se poser avec son grand vaisseau, mais il a disparu d'un seul coup.
Grogan : Tout le monde à Lotona nous a rapporté cette histoire.
Jack : Marul, vous vous souvenez d'une groupe de terrien qui vous a rendu visite il y a environ deux ans ?

Marul : Oh, le Colonel Greaves et son équipe, il a demandé à étudier la Sentinelle pour apprendre ses mystères et pour qu'un jour, votre peuple puisse en bénéficier comme les Latoniens. Malheureusement ça n'a pas été possible car c'est contre nos lois, personne ne peut voir la Sentinelle excepté son gardien.

Jack : Ouais et ben, ils l'ont vu quand même. Ils se sont rendus la nuit pour que personne ne les surprennent, ils l'ont trouvé, démonté, étudié et remonté. Le problème c'est qu'ils l'ont mal remonté, en ce moment même, ils sont en train d'essayer de la remettre en état. Mais nous n'avons pas beaucoup de temps.

Marul : Mais ce que vous dîtes est impossible, cette flamme tant qu'elle reste allumée, cela signifie que la Sentinelle, nous protège et en échange nous la préservons à notre tour. Tant que cette flamme brûle, nous sommes assurés d'être protégé de nos ennemis.
Jack : A l'heure qu'il est, il y a dans votre ville un bataillon de jaffas qui n'entendent qu'une chose, vous anéantir.

Marul : Mais notre champ magnétique est infranchissable.

Jack : Pourtant ils l'ont franchit !

Marul ; Colonel Greaves m'avait donné sa parole.

Jack : Il vous a mentit.

Marul :Vous dites la vérité ?

Grogan : C'est vrai Marul.

 

Sam : Teal'c vous m'entendez ?

Teal'c : C'est une patrouille jaffas.

Sam : Il y en a dix peut-être plus, avec un peu de chance ils ne nous verront pas.

Teal'c : Ils ont dû repérer nos traces, ils cherchent à nous suivre.

 

Greaves : On y arrivera jamais.

Kershaw : Ça a été plus rapide la dernière fois.

Daniel : Je vais essayer.

Greaves : Vous n'avez pas idée comme c'est difficile de se retrouver ce code.

Daniel : Je sais, mais j'ai envie d'essayer (Des coups de feu se font entendre)

Greaves : Je crois qu'on a de la visite. Passez-moi une arme ! Je pense que je serais plus utile avec une arme à la main.

 

Greaves : Il faut tous les tuer pour les empêcher de donner l'alerte.

Sam : Une patrouille jaffa nous a repéré. On devrait pouvoir les arrêter tout seul, occupez-vous du champ de force.

Marul : Mon peuple vit sous la protection de la Sentinelle depuis trois cents ans. Elle a été conçue pour nous garantir la paix. Jack : Je n'ai pas fait tout ce chemin pour vous raconter des histoires.

Marul : Les Latoniens risquent de mourir ?

Jack : Sans aucun doute. Je ne peux pas revenir en arrière, ce qui est fait et fait, mais, je peux vous aider à sauver des milliers de vies, peut-être même votre peuple tout entier.

Marul ; Comment cela ?

Greaves : Je crois qu'on les a tous eu.

Sam : Qu'est-ce que vous faites ici ?

Greaves : Je suis venu vous aider.

Sam : Un vaisseau-mère survole la Cité

Greaves : J'ai vu, oui.

Sam : Il faut absolument que le champ magnétique redevienne opérationnel, c'est votre mission.

Greaves : Jackson a demandé à essayer, je l'ai laissé faire, j'en ai profité pour venir en renfort, ça vous fait peur de me voir avec une arme, avouez-le. Elle est vide.

Sam : Retournez là-bas ! Teal'c je vais aller pourquoi c'est si long, continuez à surveiller.

 

Marul : Cette voix ?

Jack : Ça, ça fait partie du spectacle

Marul : Le ciel s'est embrasé.

Jack : C'est leur vaisseau qui a fait feu et en plus il est équipé de hauts parleurs.

Une femme entre.

Femme : Marul , Marul !

Marul : Le messager nous a t-il rapporté des nouvelles ?

Grogan : Les jaffas ont investit la ville si Marul a envoyé un messager il a peu de chance de revenir.

Marul : Rentre chez-toi, téatim.

Jack : Est-ce que vous avez d'autres moyens de défenses ? (Marul fait non de la tête) Carter, répondez !

Sam : Ouais, mon Colonel,

Jack : Le vaisseau-mère est arrivé avec à son bord un certain Svarog.
Sam  : Il fait partie des Grands Maîtres, si j'étais vous je partirais.

Jack  : Oui, où en êtes-vous Major ?

Sam : On essaye toujours de réparer le champ de force.

Jack : Major, ils ont dû faire des centaines de morts.

Sam : Nous faisons de notre mieux, mon Colonel.

Jack : Dîtes à Greaves que s'il ne répare pas cet engin au plus vite, je lui tire une balle dans la tête. Marul vous devez faire une annonce à votre peuple, demandez lui d'évacuer la ville et de se diriger vers la Porte des Étoiles.

Grogan : Beaucoup de Latoniens pourraient survivre.
Jack : Vous avez deux options. Restez ici à regarder votre Cité brûlée ou vous rendre et si vous vous rendez, ils annihileront votre peuple, ils en sélectionneront quelques uns pour en faire des hôtes.
Grogan : Les Goa'ulds sont des parasites pour se développer, ils ont besoin d'hôtes.

Marul : Mon peuple est innocent. Il n'a jamais rien fait de mal pour mériter un tel sort.

Jack : Il n'y a vraiment plus de temps à perdre. Vous devez prendre une décision.

Marul ; Mais, vos amis, vont peut-être parvenir à réparer les dommages qu'ils ont causé.

Jack Et d'ici là que croyez-vous que ce Svarog va faire ? En tout cas nous nous partons, avec ou sans vous Marul.

 

Kershaw : Mince.

Daniel : On y était presque, il ne manquait plus qu'à mettre en ordre les deux dernière couleurs.

Kershaw : Ça y est !

Sam : Très bien ! Nous avons trouvé le code qui commande le champ magnétique à présent on peut s'occuper de la Sentinelle.

 

Teal'c : Des guerriers de Svarog approchent en grand nombre.

 

Sam : Bien reçu Teal'c, nous allons nous replié dans la grotte, essayez de les maintenir à distance, puis ensuite revenez. Daniel vous êtes capable de réactiver le champ de force ?

Daniel : C'est ce que je fais.

Salle de Contrôle de la Porte des Étoiles

 

Harriman : Nous recevons une transmission. C'est SG3 !

Hammond : Branchez le haut parleur !

Lawrence : Ici SG3, vous me recevez ?

Hammond : Que se passe-t-il Major ?

Lawrence : Un vaisseau-mère Goa'uld s'est positionné au dessus de la Cité et à ouvert le feu. Les forces Goa'ulds sont encadrés par des chasseurs qui se dirigent vers nos positions.

Hammond : La Porte peut-elle rester ouverte ?

Lawrence : Non, pas sans renfort mon Général.

Hammond : Je vois. Quelle est la situation de SG1 ?

Lawrence : Nous n'arrivons pas à les capter, nous avons perdu le contact radio depuis plusieurs heures.

Hammond : Entendu Major. Maintenez la Porte ouverte aussi longtemps que possible et franchissez-là s'il y a danger. SG1 doit absolument accomplir sa mission.

Lawrence : A vos ordres mon Général, terminé.

Harriman : Ils vont y arriver mon Général.

Hammond : Ce n'est pas SG1 qui me préoccupe.
Harriman : Le Colonel Greaves ?

Hammond : Il a volé une arme de haute technologie appartenant à P3Y 294, il a ensuite vite retourné l'arme contre ses poursuivants et en a tué trois d'entre eux. Nous leur avons rendu l'arme volé, mais le gouvernement a rompu ses relations diplomatiques. Je vais dans mon bureau, Sergent.

Harriman : Bien mon Général.

 

Sur Latona

 

Kershaw : Mon Colonel, vous savez aussi bien que moi, que nous avons laissé cet appareil dans le même état que nous l'avions trouvé.
Greaves : Impossible, il a dû se passer quelque chose.

Kershaw : Je ne crois pas. Quelqu'un a dû intervenir entre temps.

Greaves : Taisez-vous et allez plutôt aider Jackson à réactiver le champ de force !

 

Sam : Ils sont nombreux ?

Teal'c : Il y en a beaucoup, tout un bataillon.

Daniel : J'espère que vous serez du bon côté quand le champ de force, sera redevenu opérationnel.

Sam : Vous n'aurez qu'à nous prévenir !

 

Marul : Allez-y, sauvez vos vies. Je resterais ici aussi longtemps que brûlera cette flamme.

Jack : Marul !

Marul : Tant qu'elle brûlera, le gardien veillera.

Jack : Quel gardien ?

Marul : Je ne suis pas autorisé à en parler, nos lois nous l'interdisent.

Jack : Écoutez, voulez-vous que votre peuple est une chance ou pas ?

 

Sam : Je n'ai presque plus de munitions !

Daniel : Revenez de ce côté !

Sam : Daniel !

Daniel : Oui si tout le monde arrêtait de tirer, on pourrait mieux entendre.

Kershaw : Je m'en occupe, allez vous en, allez ! (Elle est touchée par un tir alors que le champ de force est opérationnel)

Greaves : Kershaw !

Kershaw : J'ai mal.

Sam : On est hors d'atteinte, ils ne peuvent pas traverser le champ de force (A Greaves) Mon Colonel.

 

Jack : Carter ? Carter ? Est-ce que vous pouvez me répondre ? Nous devons retrouver quelqu'un surnommé le gardien c'est une sorte d'ermite, il vit près de la Sentinelle et à pour mission de s'en occuper.

Grogan avant qu'il ne soit touché par un zat : Mon Colonel !

Jaffa : Une de mes patrouilles a découvert votre Sentinelle en ce moment même des guerriers terriens sont en train d'essayer de la réactiver. Et je ne peux pas les laisser faire. Dites moi comment faire pour désactiver le champ de force !

Marul : Je n'ai pas le droit c'est contraire à nos lois

Jaffa : Vous choisissez de me défier, de sacrifier votre propre vie ?

Marul : Je choisis la Mort.

 

Sam : Mon Colonel, vous m'entendez ? Le champ de force doit empêcher la transmission du signal radio.

Kershaw : Nous l'avions bien laissé en l'état, je le sais, j'en suis certaine.

Greaves : A l'évidence non.

Sam : Si Greaves avait-été capable de la réparer on aurait été les premiers à le savoir.

Daniel : Attendez, je crois reconnaître certains de ces symboles, cette écriture à des similitudes avec celle de P2A 463.

Greaves : Et alors ?

Daniel : Et alors, il existe peut-être un lien.
Greaves : Ne me dites pas que vous pouvez déchiffrez ça !

Daniel : Non, mais je suis capable de décrypter certains symboles. En langage de P2A 463 ces signes symbolisent force de vie, énergie vitale.

Greaves : Énergie vitale ?

Daniel : Les deux forces se mêlent et n'en forment plus qu'une.

Greaves : Qu'est-ce que ça veut dire ?

Daniel : Aucune idée mais ça doit bien signifier quelque chose sinon ça ne serait pas écrit ici.

Kershaw : Le gardien mon Colonel.

Greaves : Oh ! La ferme !

Kershaw : Et si l'appareil n'était qu'une seule composante de l'équation.
Greaves : Pure théorie !

Kershaw : Nous savons tous les deux que la Sentinelle est intacte, nous l'avions parfaitement remonté et si le gardien avait outrepassé sa mission et altéré son fonctionnement ?

Teal'c : Parlez-nous un peu de ce gardien.

Kershaw : La nuit où nous avons découvert la Sentinelle, nous avons été surpris par un Latonien.

Sam : Que s'est-il passé ?

Greaves : Il nous a attaqué, je me suis défendu!

 

Flash-back

Kershaw : Attention mon Colonel !

Greaves tire sur le gardien.

 

Greaves : J'avais ordre de rapporter les informations technologiques pour parer à toutes nouvelles attaques par n'importe quels moyens.

Sam : Vous l'avez tué !

Greaves : C'était de la légitime défense !

Kershaw : Nous aurions dû le ramener dans la Cité. Il aurait pu sans doute être sauvé, le gardien nous avait supplié de le faire.

 

Flash-back.

Il le faut, s'il vous plaît, je ne peux pas mourir.

Kershaw : Faudrait peut-être l'amener à la Cité ?

Gardien : Oui, la Cité.

Greaves : C'est hors de question.

Kershaw : Mais, mon Colonel, on ne peut pas le laisser mourir !

Greaves : Nous avons des ordres, Kershaw !

Gardien : Permettez-moi de toucher la Sentinelle.

Kershaw : Pourquoi ?

Greaves : Dites-lui de la fermer !

Gardien : Il le faut, laissez-moi, toucher la Sentinelle, juste une fois avec ma main.

Greaves : Vous allez toucher ici et vous ne toucherez rien du tout.

Kershaw : Pourquoi vous faites ça ?

Greaves : C'est ça faute, il n'avait pas que nous surprendre. Faut avoir une vision plus globale, la Sentinelle pourrait sauver la Terre, un jour. Quelle est la valeur d'une vie, si on la met en balance avec des milliards de terriens.

Kershaw : On ne sait même pas comment ça marche !

Greaves : On trouvera.

Kershaw : Vous m'autorisez à le soulager un peu de sa douleur, mon Colonel.

Greaves : Allez-y mais c'est tout ce qu'on peut faire.

Gardien : Si je meurs ; Marul le sera.

Greaves : Qu'est-ce que vous essayez de me dire ?

 

 

Kershaw : Il nous a dit que s'il venait à mourir, les latoniens le seraient immédiatement.

Teal'c : Comment ça ?

Kershaw : La flamme dans la Salle de Cérémonie de Marul s'éteindrait avec lui. Il portait un bracelet autour du poignée qui était censé signaler sa mort. Je lui ai retiré pour que son peuple n'apprenne pas sa mort.

Daniel : Deux forces en une, l'homme et la machine.

Greaves : Non, on a dû louper quelque chose. Il faut juste que l'on trouve ce qui ne va pas.

Sam : Colonel ?

Jack : Ça serait peut-être le moment idéal pour remettre cet engin en route.

Jaffa : Désactivez le champ ou nous tuons votre ami.

Sam : Colonel !

Jack : Ne l'écoutez pas Carter, c'est un ordre

Jaffa : Jaffa !

Jack qui est torturé : Argh ! Faites tout sauter il faut pas qu'il arrive à ses fins.

Jaffa : Jaffa !

Jack encore torturé : Argh ! Obéissez !

Sam : Oui mon Colonel.

Greaves : Attendez ! Je sais désactiver le champ de force. Je peux le faire tout seul.

Sam : Je vais laisser le Colonel Greaves, désactiver le champ de force, mon Colonel.

Jack : Carter, je vous ai donné un ordre !

Sam : Je sais mon Colonel, je suis d'accord avec vous, mais je pense qu'il n'a pas d'autre choix.

Greaves active la Sentinelle.

Sam en parlant de Greaves : Il a disparu !

Teal'c : Ainsi que les jaffas.

Sam ferme les yeux de Kershaw, elle est morte.

Grogan : Qu'est-ce qui s'est passé ?

Sam : La Sentinelle n'avait jamais subit de dégâts, il lui maquait juste une composante humaine.

Daniel tout en libérant Jack  : L'homme et la machine unis pour former une arme de guerre.

Teal'c : La Sentinelle est vraiment une arme de grande puissance . Il serait sage de demander aux latoniens de nous permettre de l'étudier.

Jack : A mon avis, ils ne vont pas être d'accord !

Scene: SGC Control Room

Hammond comes down the stairs.

HAMMOND: How overdue is SG9?

DAVIS: Coming up on 11 hours, sir.

HAMMOND: It's not like Major Benton. Dial P2A018. Try to establish radio contact from our end.

Jack walks up.

O'NEILL: Sir? My mission report. Better late than never I always say.

DAVIS: Chevron 1 encoded.

O'NEILL: Yep, I always say that.

DAVIS: Chevron 2 encoded.

O'NEILL: What's going on?

HAMMOND: SG9 was on an extended mission to re-establish diplomatic relations with P2A018.

DAVIS: Chevron 3 encoded.

O'NEILL: Zero one eight?

HAMMOND: Latona.

O'NEILL: Oh yes.

HAMMOND: One of several planets visited by the NID while running their offworld program.

O'NEILL: Right.

HAMMOND: Major Benton has spent several months trying to negotiate access to a defensive weapon they call The Sentinel. It's supposed to be capable of defending their entire planet.

O'NEILL: Yeah, I read the report.

DAVIS: Chevron 6 encoded.

HAMMOND: Well, they were scheduled to return early this morning.

DAVIS: Chevron 7 locked.

The Gate engages.

DAVIS: Standing by, sir. MALP relay is active.

HAMMOND: This is Hammond. SG9 report? Major Benton, you are overdue. Please respond.

GROGAN: General, Sir, this is Sergeant Grogan. Major Benton was....please.... the Stargate....Latonans tried to.......with the..... didn't work.

HAMMOND: Sergeant, can you make it back to the Stargate?

GROGAN: Negative. There are too many jaffa....by a staff....there's no way I can get back to the Stargate. Under fire....

HAMMOND: Sergeant, shut it down.

DAVIS: Sir.

The Gate shuts down. Jack looks at Hammond.

Scene: Briefing room

SG1 and Hammond are watching a video on the projector screen. There's an alien man looking at the camera.

GREAVES: Okay, Marul, go ahead.

MARUL: Your friends will see me?

GREAVES: Not right now. I'll send your greeting back with my report.

MARUL: What shall I say?

GREAVES: Anything you like.

Marul shrugs.

GREAVES: How about hello?

Marul comes right up to the camera.

MARUL: Hello.

Hammond switches off the recording.

O'NEILL: The rat bastard.

DANIEL: He came across as very nice.

O'NEILL: The voice behind the camera.

HAMMOND: Colonel Shaun Greaves, formerly of the NID. He led an offworld team for Colonel Maybourne and was one of the members of that organisation convicted of high treason for his actions.

DANIEL: And what was Greaves team trying to steal?

HAMMOND: The Latonans possess a planetary defence they call the Sentinel. Which has apparently kept them safe from the Goa'uld for generations.

CARTER: Well I can see why the NID would want to get their hands on it.

O'NEILL: We put `em all away before they could.

HAMMOND: Frankly I'm afraid Colonel Greaves team may have done something to the Sentinel device they haven't admitted to.

O'NEILL: Fiddlin' around with it, was it?

CARTER: Well according to his report, the Latonans never granted Greaves team access to the Sentinel device before they were recalled and arrested.

DANIEL: You don't think it's possible for an NID operative to lie?

TEAL'C: I believe it is Daniel Jackson.

DANIEL: Right. So if Greaves team disabled the Latonans only means of self defence...

CARTER: We're responsible.

O'NEILL: Greaves is responsible, thank you.

HAMMOND: I doubt the Latonans would appreciate that distinction, Colonel.

TEAL'C: Time will be of the essence. The Goa'uld forces SG9 encountered on Latona were most likely sent through the Stargate as a test.

CARTER: To determine if the Sentinel was operational?

DANIEL: And by now they will have reported back.

TEAL'C: A Goa'uld mothership is most likely not far off if the Goa'uld believe that Latona may now be conquered.

O'NEILL: Might be a good time to try out that new guidance system on the UAV, sir.

HAMMOND: I think that can be arranged.

CARTER: Sir, before we go anywhere, we need to talk to Greaves.

O'NEILL: Why?

CARTER: Well, whether we like it or not, Sir, Colonel Greaves and Lieutenant Kershaw maybe the only people qualified to fix it.

O'NEILL: I'll go.

Scene: Cell

Greaves is brought in chained up by a guard.

O'NEILL: You're dismissed. (To the Guard)

The guard stays there.

GREAVES: He's worried I might try to kill you.

O'NEILL: In that case, I insist.

Jack waves the guard away and he leaves.

O'NEILL: Had many visitors lately? Maybourne stop by? See how the old team's doing?

GREAVES: What do you want, O'Neill?

O'NEILL: P2A018. A device called the Sentinel.

GREAVES: What about it?

O'NEILL: I need to know what you did to screw it up and what I need to do to fix it.

GREAVES: I'm more inclined to tell you where to shove it.

O'NEILL: As we speak, SG9 is either pinned down by the Goa'uld or dead, so let's just cut the crap, okay?

GREAVES: How is this my problem?

O'NEILL: You're responsible. Zero one eight is defenceless because of you.

GREAVES: Earth is defenceless because of you. You don't seem to have a problem with that.

O'NEILL: You stole technology from our allies. If I hadn't shut you down, they would have.

GREAVES: Do you really think the Asgard or the Tok'ra will really rush to our defence when the Goa'uld finally decide to stomp on us? That day is coming, Colonel. Don't kid yourself.

O'NEILL: Okay. I guess I should go have a chat with Kershaw.

Jack gets up and walks to the door.

GREAVES: The Latonans didn't want to show us the Sentinel. We found it ourselves not far from the city. There was a force field guarding the device itself. Kershaw and I took almost two weeks to get in, take it apart and put it back together, good as new.

O'NEILL: Not good as new. You did something wrong.

GREAVES: The only thing we did wrong was come back to base to meet our new CO. It's funny, at the time I was looking forward to meeting you.

O'NEILL: I need you to write down exactly how you got in and exactly what I need to do to fix this.

GREAVES: If I do anything, anything, I want my sentence commuted.

O'NEILL: I think that's understood going in.

GREAVES: And you'll need to take us with you. Kershaw and me.

O'NEILL: SG1 can handle it.

GREAVES: Who do you think you are? We were good, Colonel. Every bit as good as you. We believed what we were doing was for the good of the country. And if you hadn't put me in here, we might have had our own Sentinel by now.

O'NEILL: You done?

GREAVES: I don't care how good Carter thinks she is or how cocky you are. The device is way too complicated for you to try and repair without us. You already know that or you wouldn't be here.

Scene: Control room

Hammond, Sam, Jack, Davis and Greaves are watching a UAV launch.

DAVIS: UAV is away, Sir. Climbing into position.

CARTER: Receiving telemetry. Confirming two staff cannons emplacements concealed twenty metres or so from the Gate. We got lucky sir, the cannons weren't able to down the UAV before it was out of their range.

HAMMOND: Begin painting the targets as soon as the UAV reaches altitude. Close the blast doors and prepare to launch.

DAVIS: Prepare to launch.

Scene: Latona

The jaffa wait at the gate.

Scene: Control room

CARTER: Target sierra one has been acquired.

HAMMOND: Sergeant, launch when ready.

In the Gateroom two missiles are lowered in front of the Gate.

DAVIS: Missile away.

One missile fires.

Scene: Latona

A missile comes through the Gate and rises as the jaffa look on. One jaffa looks at the staff cannon and sees a green dot . We focus in on his face as the missile comes down and explodes.

Scene: Control room

Sam looks at the computer showing the targets.

CARTER: Sierra one has been destroyed. Attempting to acquire sierra two.

GREAVES: How do you know those are the only emplacements guarding the Gate?

O'NEILL: We don't.

CARTER: Sierra two has been acquired by UAV.

HAMMOND: Launch when ready.

The second missile goes through the Gate.

Scene: Latona

The missile comes through the Gate and the jaffa try to run.

Scene: Control room

CARTER: Sierra two has been destroyed. But I can't confirm casualties. UAV switching to recon mode for stage 2.

O'NEILL: That's us.

HAMMOND: Colonel, SG3 will take point.

Sam, Jack and Greaves leave the control room.

Scene: Gateroom

Teal'c, Daniel and Kershaw come into the Gateroom from the opposite side to Sam, Jack and Greaves.

GREAVES: Kershaw.

She nods to him.

O'NEILL: Major Lawrence, make it a clean sweep.

LAWRENCE: Yes, sir.

O'NEILL: (To Teal'c) Why don't you go with them? Keep `em out of trouble. We'll be on your six in sixty seconds.

LAWRENCE: SG3, let's go, let's go, let's go.

They run up the ramp.

GREAVES: I'll say this again. I don't like the thought of going into this unarmed.

O'NEILL: And.... I don't care.

KERSHAW: I feel better just knowing there's an archaeologist watching our back.

DANIEL: Yeah, which end do the bullets go in again?

Daniel holds up a knife. LOL.

GREAVES: I'd be happy to show you.

Sam and Jack look at him.

O'NEILL: Our mission objective is to fix whatever you screwed up. If you get any ideas other than that, I'll shoot you. Understood?

GREAVES: Yeah.

O'NEILL: Move out.

They do.

Scene: Latona

The team come through the wormhole with Jack last.

CARTER: No sign of SG3.

O'NEILL: (Over radio) SG3, this is SG1 niner. Report.

The Gate disengages. Teal'c runs up.

TEAL'C: Three jaffa warriors survived the missile attack. SG3 is in pursuit to prevent them from reporting our arrival. Major Lawrence suggests we continue on.

O'NEILL: Colonel?

GREAVES: You want me to take point without a weapon?

O'NEILL: I want you to point Teal'c in the right direction.

He points. They move out but Daniel hangs back with Jack.

DANIEL: Just out of curiosity, how many years did you take off their sentence if they managed to fix this?

O'NEILL: Actually, they'll get a few more years out of this.

DANIEL: More?

O'NEILL: They were on death row.

Scene: Latona forest

The team moves along.

CARTER: So how did you manage to find the Sentinel if the Latonans didn't want to show it to you?

KERSHAW: Maybe we're good?

O'NEILL: Bribed the locals, eh?

GREAVES: I see you've done your homework.

DANIEL: Major Benton's preliminary report said the Latonans were egalitarian. They don't use currency of any kind.

KERSHAW: They don't care about material things.

O'NEILL: Everybody's got their price.

Teal'c suddenly stops and motions everyone down. They move forward and come across Grogan. Jack takes his MP5 and he wakes up.

GROGAN: Colonel?

O'NEILL: Grogan.

He gives him his weapon back.

GROGAN: There was a jaffa patrol on my six most of the day. I decided to stop running and fight it out.

TEAL'C: How long ago?

GROGAN: Last night. I guess I passed out and they went right by me. They'll be long gone.

O'NEILL: Where's the rest of your team?

GROGAN: Major Benton took a staff hit in the chest on our way back to the Gate. Tartman and Winters got away with me at first, but I'm the only one left Sir.

CARTER: Here.

She offers him water.

GROGAN: This isn't supposed to be happening Sir. The Latonans have this device.

O'NEILL: We know, Lieutenant.

CARTER: We're here to fix it. Sir, should I radio SG3 and let them know Grogan's coming back to the Gate?

O'NEILL: Negative Major. Teal'c, How soon should we expect the mothership here?

TEAL'C: Of that I am unsure, O'Neill. It could be hours or perhaps even days.

O'NEILL: Grogan, can you get me into the city?

GROGAN: There are jaffa patrols all over the damn place making sure the Latonans keep their curfew. But yeah, I can take you straight to Marul if you want.

KERSHAW: That's a waste of time.

CARTER: Why do you say that?

KERSHAW: The Sentinel was built hundreds of years ago by Marul's ancestors. He has no clue how to use it.

GREAVES: None of 'em do.

O'NEILL: All right look, we're here to help these people.

GREAVES: What the hell do you think you can do?

O'NEILL: Maybe give them another option other than being wiped out? Grogan, you good to go?

GROGAN: Mmm hmm.

O'NEILL: Good. Carter, you're in charge.

CARTER: Yes, sir.

O'NEILL: Fix it.

CARTER: Yes sir. Good luck, sir.

Jack and Grogan leave in one direction, the others in another.

Scene: Latona

Jack and Grogan reach a hill. Jack gets out his binocular thing.

GROGAN: That's the main road leading in and out of the city.

O'NEILL: You wouldn't happen to know a back way in there, would you?

GROGAN: Yes sir, I think I do.

Scene: Sentinel cave

The team moves up to it.

KERSHAW: This is it.

DANIEL: What is?

GREAVES: You've got to know it's there. We went right by it the first time.

CARTER: All right, you're on.

TEAL'C: Major Carter, it would be wise if we were to remain in a concealed position guarding the entrance.

CARTER: Absolutely. At least until the force field's down.

Teal'c moves forward.

DANIEL: And how long will that take?

KERSHAW: Last time, it took just over 48 hours.

CARTER: Well maybe Daniel can help you shave a couple of days off that estimate.

Daniel goes inside the cave with them as Sam takes up a position outside.

Scene: Marul's Chambers.

A man is stood in front of a jaffa.

JAFFA: You are not preparing for his arrival as I instructed. Your people ignore the curfew.

MARUL: Because they do not understand it.

JAFFA: It is a simple matter. Lord Svarog has claimed Latona as part of his domain. Your conquest will happen as sure as the sun will rise. Accept that and you may live to serve him.

MARUL: My people have no desire to serve anyone.

JAFFA: When Svarog rains fire from the sky, they will beg for his mercy. And offer him their devotion.

MARUL: No they will not.

JAFFA: They will, when those around them begin to die. This is my last warning.

MARUL: Your Lord Svarog should not come. The Sentinel will send him away. You will all be sent away.

JAFFA: So you have said, for three days. Yet here I stand. The Sentinel is nothing more than a legend.

MARUL: It is very real.

JAFFA: Then my patrols will find it and destroy it.

The jaffa leaves with other jaffa.

Jack and Grogan then come in.

GROGAN: It's all right, Marul, he's a friend.

MARUL: From your world?

GROGAN: That's right. He's come all the way from Earth just to see you.

O'NEILL: I'm Colonel Jack O'Neill. We need to talk.

Scene: Inside Sentinel Cave

Greaves and Kershaw are working on the force field which is making sounds.

Daniel touches the force field.

KERSHAW: Please don't do that.

DANIEL: Doesn't really look much like a weapon, does it?

GREAVES: Why don't you go make yourself useful, Dr Jackson, and go watch the front door with your friends?

DANIEL: Well I'd rather be trying to help you but you're approach looks completely random.

KERSHAW: The patterns change randomly, we're trying to keep ahead.

DANIEL: Sounds?

KERSHAW: The code to shut off the field is always changing relative to the harmonics between the tones in each pattern.

DANIEL: And how many different patterns are there?

KERSHAW: We've recorded over a hundred.

DANIEL: Oh. So I should probably..

GREAVES: Shut up.

DANIEL: Yeah.

Daniel then starts whistling and stops.

Scene: Marul's Chambers.

Jack and Grogan talk to Marul.

MARUL: Your offer is kind but not necessary.

O'NEILL: I think it is.

MARUL: The Sentinel has not failed us in centuries. It will not fail us now.

O'NEILL: What's taking it so long?

MARUL: I've sent a messenger to the Sentinel to seek the answers to that question. Perhaps it is waiting. You will see. Our enemy will be sent away.

O'NEILL: How exactly?

MARUL: One moment they are there. The next they are gone in white light.

O'NEILL: Gone where?

MARUL: To the place our ancestors divined. We are only grateful our enemies are gone.

O'NEILL: And that's it?

GROGAN: Their civilisation's technologically regressed, Sir. No one knows how anything works as long as it keeps working.

O'NEILL: And you've seen this thing working?

MARUL: Oh yes. As a child, an enemy of our people came in a great ship. But it was sent away.

GROGAN: That's the story we get from just about everybody, Sir.

O`NEILL: Marul, do you remember a team of guys who came here from earth about 2 years ago?

MARUL: Colonel Greaves, of course. He asked that he might see the Sentinel to learn its mysteries so that one day your people might be protected as we are. But to do that, that would be against our highest law. No one may see the Sentinel except its caretaker.

O'NEILL: Yeah, well they did anyway. They worked at night so no one would know. Somehow they got in, they took it apart, put it back together again but something's wrong. They're there right now, trying to fix it but we might be running out of time.

MARUL: What you say cannot be so. This flame burns to tell us the Sentinel is watching over us and in turn, is being watched over. As long as this flame burns, we can rest assured that we are safe from harm.

O'NEILL: There's a battalion of jaffa in your city right now just waiting to harm you.

MARUL: There is an inpenetrable barrier to the chamber.

O'NEILL: They got past it.

MARUL: Colonel Greaves gave me his word.

O'NEILL: He lied.

MARUL: Yet you speak the truth?

GROGAN: He does Marul.

Marul just looks out of the window.

Scene: Outside Sentinel cave

Sam picks up her binoculars to see Jaffa marching on their position.

CARTER: Teal'c, come in. (on radio)

TEAL'C: A jaffa patrol.

CARTER: I count ten, maybe more. With luck, they'll pass right by us.

TEAL'C: It is more likely they followed our tracks to this location.

They raise their weapons.

Scene: Inside Sentinel Cave

Greaves and Kershaw are at panels trying to listen to the notes.

GREAVES: This is impossible.

KERSHAW: Look we haven't been at it that long.

DANIEL: Let me try.

GREAVES: Do you have any idea how complicated this code is?

DANIEL: Yes I think so, just let me try.

They hear gunfire outside.

GREAVES: It's hit the fan already.

He turns to Daniel.

GREAVES: Give me your Berretta. You think you can help in here, well I can help out there.

Daniel gives him the gun and Greaves goes outside.

Scene: Outside Sentinel cave

Greaves comes out and starts firing.

GREAVES: We have to take all of them out so they can't report back.

One jaffa runs off.

CARTER: Jaffa patrol must have tracked us here. We can hold them off for now but get that force field down! (on radio)

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

Kershaw looks at Daniel.

KERSHAW: Do you know what you're listening for?

DANIEL: The mathematical progression harmonic in each given pattern altered to it's spectral equivalent.

Daniel starts to work.

Scene: Marul's Chambers

Jack gets up.

MARUL: My people have depended on the Sentinel for 3 hundred years. It was created to be there always. So that we may feel free to pursue matters of the mind and spirit without fear of what is happening now. If what you say is true...

O'NEILL: I didn't come all this way to lie to you.

MARUL: How many will die?

O'NEILL: I don't know. And I can't undo what's already been done. But we can still save hundreds of your people maybe all of them.

MARUL: How?

O'NEILL: We're prepared to evacuate as many people as possible and military support to get them to the Gate.

MARUL: Leave our world?

O'NEILL: I'm afraid so. As we speak a Goa'uld mothership could be on it's way here.

MARUL: What will I tell them? The very people who doomed our world now ask us to trust our lives to them?

Suddenly explosions start outside. The mothership has arrived and is bombarding the surface. A voice is broadcast.

SVAROG: For I am Svarog. From this day forth you will serve me!

Scene: Outside Sentinel cave

Teal'c is still firing on the jaffa. A jaffa comes up towards Teal'c and Greaves shoots him.

GREAVES: That's all of them I can see.

CARTER: What the hell are you doing out here?

GREAVES: Helping you out.

CARTER: A mothership just opened up on the city.

GREAVES: I saw.

CARTER: You need to get that force field down, that's the reason you're here.

GREAVES: Jackson wanted to try, I gave him a try. You were getting shot at so I backed you up. Or is it you don't like the idea of me with a gun? It's empty.

He shows her the gun.

CARTER: Get back in there.

Greaves goes.

CARTER: (On radio) Teal'c, I wanna see what's taking so long. Keep an eye out.

Sam follows Greaves.

Scene: Marul's Chambers

MARUL: That voice.

O'NEILL: All part of the show.

MARUL: The sky rained fire.

O'NEILL: It's from a ship in orbit. One with really big speakers.

Grogan turns to the door. A woman comes in.

WOMAN: Marul? Marul?

MARUL: Has the messenger returned with any news?

GROGAN: There are jaffa patrols all over the place. If Marul's sent someone, I doubt they made it very far.

MARUL: Go home, Thee-eter.

She leaves.

O'NEILL: Do you have any other way of defending yourself?

Marul shakes his head.

O'NEILL: Carter, come in. (on radio)

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave.

CARTER: Yes sir.

Scene: Marul's Chamber

O'NEILL: The mothership's here. Some guy named Svarog.

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

CARTER: He's one of the System Lords sir. You should get out of there.

Scene: Marul's Chamber

O'NEILL: Yeah, what's your progress?

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

CARTER: Still working on the force field, sir.

Scene: Marul's Chamber

O'NEILL: Major, people are starting to die here.

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

CARTER: Yes, sir. We're doing our best.

Scene: Marul's Chamber

O'NEILL: You tell Greaves, if he doesn't fix that thing, I'll shoot him anyway.

Jack turns to Marul.

O'NEILL: Marul, you have to make an announcement. Tell your people to evacuate the city and head to the Stargate.

GROGAN: Many of your people could survive.

The bombardment continues.

O'NEILL: You've got two options. Sit here and watch your city burn to the ground or surrender. If you surrender, they'll enslave your people. And they'll take some of them as hosts.

GROGAN: Goa'uld are parasites. They take over the bodies of people.

MARUL: My people are innocent. They have done nothing to deserve this.

O'NEILL: I can't stay here much longer, you got to make a decision.

MARUL: But your friends may yet be able to repair the damage they have done?

O'NEILL: This Goa'uld is not gonna wait for that. It's time to go. With or without you.

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

KERSHAW: Dammit.

DANIEL: No you almost had it, you just had the last two colours in the wrong order.

Daniel does something and the force field comes down.

CARTER: Go. (On radio) Colonel, this is Carter, we've made it past the force field and we're starting to work on the Sentinel.

Scene: Outside Sentinel cave

A horn sounds and more jaffa appear.

TEAL'C: Warriors of Svarog are approaching in greater numbers. (over radio)

Scene: Inside Sentinel Cave

CARTER: (over radio) Understood Teal'c. We'll make our stand inside the cave. Keep them at bay as long as you can then get in here. Daniel, can you get that force field working again?

DANIEL: I'm on it.

Scene: Outside Sentinel cave

Teal'c gets ready to start firing and a death glider flies over.

Scene: SGC Control room

Hammond walks down the stairs.

DAVIS: Incoming transmission. It's SG3 Sir.

HAMMOND: Put it on speakers.

LAWRENCE: This is SG3 niner, come in.

HAMMOND: What's your situation Major?

LAWRENCE: A Goa'uld mothership is firing on the Latonan city from orbit. Goa'uld forces are heading towards our position. Battalion strength supported by gliders.

HAMMOND: Can you hold the Stargate?

LAWRENCE: Not without reinforcements Sir.

HAMMOND: Understood. What's the status of SG1?

LAWRENCE: They're out of radio range Sir. We've been out of contact for several hours.

HAMMOND: Very well Major. Hold the Stargate as long as you can, then get out of there. SG1 will just have to get the job done.

LAWRENCE: Yes sir. SG3 niner out.

The Gate disengages.

DAVIS: I'm sure they'll find a way, Sir.

HAMMOND: It's not SG1 I'm worried about.

DAVIS: Colonel Greaves?

HAMMOND: While stealing a powerful beam weapon from the people of P3Y294, Colonel Greaves turned the device against his pursuers, killing all three. We returned the stolen weapon but the Government of P3Y294 would have nothing further to do with us. I'll be in my office, Sergeant.

DAVIS: Yes sir.

Scene: Inside Sentinel Cave

Greaves is working on the Sentinel.

KERSHAW: Colonel, you know as well as I do that we left this exactly the way we found it.

GREAVES: We can't have, we missed something.

KERSHAW: No we didn't. It must be something else.

GREAVES: Either shut up or go help Jackson get the force field back on.

Scene: Outside Sentinel Cave

Teal'c is firing and being fired upon. He retreats to the cave

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

Teal'c comes in.

CARTER: How many?

TEAL'C: Several gliders. A battalion of warriors.

DANIEL: Ah, you're gonna want to be on this side when we get this thing up again.

CARTER: Just tell us when.

Scene: Marul's Chambers

MARUL: Go. Save yourselves. I will remain here as long as this flame burns.

O'NEILL: Marul?

MARUL: As long as it burns, the caretaker lives.

O'NEILL: What caretaker?

MARUL: He is not to be spoken of. It is against our law.

O'NEILL: Look, do you want your people to survive or not?

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

Sam is firing at the entrance.

CARTER: I'm almost out of ammo!

DANIEL: Get on this side.

Sam and Teal'c run to the other side. A jaffa comes in and Sam fires on him.

CARTER: Daniel!

DANIEL: If everyone would stop shooting for a second, maybe we could hear what we're doing.

KERSHAW: I got it. I got it. Go, go, go.

A jaffa comes round the corner and shoots Kershaw in the back just as the force field goes up and she falls in the right side.

GREAVES: Kershaw!

Greaves runs over to her.

KERSHAW: I'm hurt.

The jaffa start to fire on the field to no effect.

CARTER: It's gonna be all right. They can't get past the force field. Colonel?

Greaves goes back to the Sentinel.

Scene: Marul's Chambers

Jack is on the radio to Sam.

O'NEILL: Carter. Carter, if you can hear me, we've got to find someone called the caretaker. It's like a hermit who lives near the Sentinel, apparently takes care of it.

GROGAN: Colonel!

Grogan is zatted. Jack turns and is zatted too. Jaffa grab Marul.

JAFFA: One of my patrols has discovered your Sentinel. Even now warriors of the Tau'ri endeavor to repair it. I cannot allow them to succeed. Tell me how to disable to force field.

MARUL: That would be against our highest law.

JAFFA: You would sacrifice your own life to defy me?

MARUL: I would.

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

Sam gives Kershaw an injection.

CARTER: Colonel O'Neill, come in. (over radio) Force field must be blocking the radio signal.

KERSHAW: We put it back the way it was. I know we did.

GREAVES: Obviously we didn't.

CARTER: If Colonel Greaves can get it back in working order, we'll be the first to know.

Daniel is looking at the Sentinel.

DANIEL: Wait a second, I think I recognise some of these symbols. Their written language is similar to the people of P2A463.

GREAVES: So?

DANIEL: So it's possible they're related.

GREAVES: Don't tell me you can read that.

DANIEL: No, I'm saying I recognise some of these symbols. On P2A463, these symbols mean life force, life energy.

GREAVES: Life energy?

DANIEL: These ones mean two as one.

GREAVES: And that means?

DANIEL: I have no idea but it must mean something otherwise they wouldn't have written it here.

KERSHAW: The caretaker, Colonel.

GREAVES: Shut up!

KERSHAW: What if the device is only part of the equation?

GREAVES: You're guessing.

KERSHAW: We both know there's nothing wrong with the Sentinel. We put it back the way it was. What if the caretaker did more than just look after it?

TEAL'C: Tell us of this caretaker.

KERSHAW: The night we found this place a Latonan man took us by surprise.

CARTER: What happened?

GREAVES: He attacked us, I defended myself.

FLASHBACK

Greaves and Kershaw are looking at the Sentinel. A man with a big stick comes towards them.

KERSHAW: Colonel, look out!

Greaves shoots him once. The caretaker goes down.

PRESENT

GREAVES: My orders were to retrieve technology that could save Earth from the Goa'uld at all costs, Major. You know what that means.

CARTER: You killed him?

GREAVES: I defended myself.

KERSHAW: We should have taken him into the city. They could have saved him, we knew they could have. The caretaker, he begged us to.

FLASHBACK

Kershaw is putting pressure on the wound.

CARETAKER: Please. Please I don't wish to die.

KERSHAW: Colonel, maybe we can take him back to the city?

CARETAKER: Yes, the city.

GREAVES: That's not an option.

KERSHAW: But sir, he'll die if we just leave him here.

GREAVES: We have our orders, Kershaw.

CARETAKER: Then allow me to touch the Sentinel.

KERSHAW: Why?

GREAVES: Shut him up.

CARETAKER: Allow me to touch the Sentinel just once with my hand.

GREAVES: You're not going anywhere, you're not touching anything.

KERSHAW: This is wrong.

GREAVES: It's his own damn fault for sneaking up on me like that. You got to think of the big picture here. The Sentinel could save Earth one day. We're talking about one life. One life, compared to billions of people.

KERSHAW: We don't even know how it works.

GREAVES: We'll find out.

KERSHAW: Will you allow me to give him something for the pain then, sir?

GREAVES: Fine, but that's all we can do.

CARETAKER: When I die, Marul will know.

GREAVES: What do you mean, he'll know?

PRESENT

KERSHAW: He told us if he were to die, the Latonans would know anyway.

TEAL'C: How so?

KERSHAW: A flame in Marul's chamber would die with him. He wore a band around his wrist, it was a dead man's switch. I rigged it so nobody would know he was gone.

DANIEL: Two forces as one. Man and machine.

GREAVES: No, no. We missed something, we just need to find out what it is.

The jaffa outside the forcefield leave. They come back with Jack and Grogan chained up and force them to their knees.

CARTER: Colonel.

O'NEILL: You know, now would be a good time to turn that thing on.

JAFFA: Lower the force field or your friends will be killed.

CARTER: Sir?

O'NEILL: Don't do it Carter. That's an order.

JAFFA: Jaffa.

The jaffa behind Jack jabs him with a pain stick.

O'NEILL: Arrgghhh! Blow it up, don't let them have it.

JAFFA: Jaffa.

The jaffa hits him again.

O'NEILL: Arrgghh! Do it!

CARTER: Yes sir.

GREAVES: I can deactivate the force field.

He moves to the Sentinel.

GREAVES: I can do it from here.

CARTER: I'm gonna let Colonel Greaves take down the force field, sir.

O'NEILL: Carter, I gave you a direct order.

CARTER: Yes, sir, I understand that. I think it's the right thing to do.

Greaves places his hands on the Sentinel. A white light appears and the jaffa disappear. The light appears in the city and rises taking the jaffa with it.

Scene: Inside Sentinel cave

SG1 and Grogan look up and Greaves is gone.

CARTER: He's gone.

TEAL'C: As are the jaffa.

Sam looks at Kershaw and closes her eyes, she has died.

GROGAN: What just happened?

CARTER: The Sentinel was never damaged Sir, it just required a human component.

Daniel unchains Jack.

DANIEL: Man and machine working together to become a weapon.

TEAL'C: The Sentinel is indeed a device of great power. We would be wise to ask the Latonans if we may study it further.

O'NEILL: Oh I think I know what they'd say.
